Oakland Township, Michigan | Powder Room Remodel — Big Impact in a Small Space

"I highly recommend Costello & Co for any home improvement project. Michelle & Jamie transformed my laundry room & powder room into usable, modern spaces. My old out-of-date laundry room is now filled with storage, ample counter space & a modern vibe that makes even the boring chore of laundry pleasant. My small powder room pops with the dark wallpaper & vintage-inspired vanity. Through every step, Michelle & Jamie were there with ideas, advice and solutions to the small hiccups that occurred along the way. I couldn’t ask for a more professional and friendly crew to work with!

Some of the most memorable rooms in a home are the smallest ones.
A powder room is the space guests use most and owners think about least — until it's done right. Then it becomes the room everyone comments on. The room that stops people on their way back from the hallway. The room that makes a visitor pull out their phone.
This Oakland Township powder room was an opportunity to do exactly that — to take a compact footprint and transform it into a bold, considered space that punches far above its square footage. No compromises. No builder-grade choices. Just intentional design in every inch of the room.
The Project
The Design
Custom Walnut Vanity
The walnut vanity is the anchor of this powder room — warm, furniture-like, and completely custom. Rounded corners soften what could have been a rigid cabinet presence in a small space, and the warm wood grain adds an organic quality that works in direct conversation with the darkness surrounding it.
A marble countertop sits above the walnut cabinet — cool veining against warm wood, a pairing that feels classic and current simultaneously. The contrast between the stone and the timber is quiet but immediately noticeable, and it gives the vanity a craftsmanship quality that off-the- shelf cabinetry simply cannot replicate.
Dark Textured Wallpaper
The walls are where this powder room earns its personality. Dark, richly textured wallpaper wraps the space in a depth and dimension that paint could never achieve — creating a moodiness that feels sophisticated rather than heavy. In a small room, dark walls do something counterintuitive: they make the space feel more intentional, more curated, more complete. The texture catches light differently throughout the day, giving the room a quality that changes with the hour.
This is a design choice that requires confidence. We made it deliberately — and it's the reason this powder room photographs the way it does.

Brass Fixtures & Sculptural Lighting
Warm brass fixtures run throughout — faucet, hardware, sconce — creating a consistent warmth that connects every element in the room. Brass was chosen specifically to work against the dark wallpaper: warm metal against cool darkness, each making the other more apparent.
The lighting is where the room gets its sculptural quality. A globe pendant and wall sconce are chosen for their form as much as their function — objects in the room as much as light sources. In a powder room used primarily by guests, lighting is set design. These fixtures perform that role.
Marble Countertop & Hex Floor Tile
The marble countertop's soft veining introduces the only lightness in a room dominated by dark and warm tones — giving the eye somewhere to rest and the space a natural focal point above the vanity. Below, a classic hex tile floor grounds the room in a pattern that references traditional craftsmanship while reading as completely current in this context.
Why Powder Rooms are Worth Investing In?
A powder room renovation is one of the most cost-effective design statements you can make in a home. The square footage is small, which means premium materials — marble, custom millwork, designer wallpaper, sculptural lighting — are accessible at a fraction of what they'd cost in a full bathroom.
For Oakland County homeowners preparing to sell, a powder room renovation consistently returns its cost at resale and then some — because buyers notice powder rooms, remember them, and talk about them. For homeowners staying put, a beautifully designed powder room is a daily reminder that your home reflects who you are, right down to the spaces in between.
This Oakland Township project is a perfect example of what's possible when a small space is treated with the same intention and craftsmanship as the most prominent rooms in a home.
